Pre Game Report: Lightning at Rangers

One hundred and fifty-one days ago, the Tampa Bay Lightning found themselves in an all too familiar position: knocked out of the Stanley Cup Playoffs in the first round.

The story the same as the previous three years: poor postseason defense, a lack of offensive pressure, and a goaltending battle that ultimately fell just short.

Tonight, however, none of that matters.

The Lightning open the 2026-27 season against the New York Rangers in Madison Square Garden, with puck drop set for 7 p.m. ET. For the Bolts, this is more than game 1, this is the first opportunity to rewrite a shaky postseason narrative that has followed them for years.

Tampa Bay enters the season with much of its championship-era core still intact, led by Nikita Kucherov, Brayden Point, Victor Hedman, and Andrei Vasilevskiy. On the other end, the Rangers return a struggling team still looking for their first win of the year after being shut out 3-0 by the Boston Bruins in their season opener.

One of the biggest storylines for the Lightning tonight is the long-awaited and highly anticipated return of captain and Norris Trophy winning defenseman Victor Hedman.

After a mid-game exit March 19, Hedman would go on to miss the remainder of the regular season and all seven of Tampa Bay’s playoff games. On May 5, he revealed this absence was to prioritize his mental health. Hedman later opened up further about the extreme performance anxiety he developed, and how gamedays had become increasingly difficult to manage.

Now, more than six months since he last appeared in an NHL game, No. 77 is back in the Lightning lineup.

This return provides more than just a familiar face on the blue line. The Bolts captain and Conn Smythe Trophy recipient brings 17 years of NHL experience back to a defensive core that has previously struggled to navigate his absence.

Hedman’s return will also provide some much-needed support in front of goaltender Andrei Vasilevskiy. The two-time Vezina Trophy winner finished last season with a 39-15-4 record and a 2.31 goals-against average, once again establishing himself as one of Tampa Bay’s most important assets.

For the Rangers, goaltender Igor Shesterkin is expected to get the call tonight, setting up yet another matchup between two of the league’s premier netminders.

With New York earning points in seven of their last nine home games against Tampa Bay, Madison Square Garden has never been an easy place for the Bolts to play in, providing them with their first obstacle in what they hope to be a long and successful new campaign.

One single game cannot erase four first round exits, but it can set a tone. With their captain back, that championship core in-tact, and a fresh set of 82 games ahead, tonight gives the Lightning their first chance to show that the dynasty isn’t done yet.
